Are Male External Catheters Right For You?

MECThe word “catheter” may seem intimidating, and can bring up thoughts of discomfort and invasiveness. However, intermittent catheters are not the only option out there when it comes to catheters. For gentlemen managing urinary incontinence, male external catheters may be a great solution that you maybe hadn’t thought of.

Male external catheters, also known as condom catheters, are a device used to manage urinary incontinence. Much like a condom, these catheters are worn over the penis. The urine is then drained from the male external catheter to a collection bag that is secured to the leg. If a male external catheter is being used overnight, most collection bags can be connected to a bedside overnight collection bag.

Like most incontinence products, male external catheters are available in a variety of sizes. Unlike intermittent catheters that are sized in French scale (FR), male external catheters are sized in millimeters (mm). It is important to select the correct size, as incorrect sizing can cause problems. A male external catheter that is too large will likely leak, and one that is too small may cause irritation and discomfort to the wearer.

Selecting a male external catheter that will work for you and be comfortable to wear is essential. If you are sensitive to Latex or have a Latex allergy, ensure that you select a product that is made from a Latex-free material. Many male external catheters come with an adhesive to assist in securing the catheter to the penis. If your skin is often sensitive to adhesives or you would prefer not to have an adhesive, it would be best to look at other male external catheter options.

To use this type of catheter, you will require a collection bag with drainage tubing. For overnight use, you'll need a bedside bag. At Healthwick, collection bags and male external catheters are sold separately, unless otherwise specified in the product description. Extension tubing can also be purchased separately.
